Cultivating Our Community

with Genevieve Garruppo, Photographer

As a woman-owned business, we are always looking to support other female professionals. Genevieve Garruppo is one of our favorite photographers to work with. With an artistic eye, she is able to balance the tactile nature of interior photography with the methodical, allowing viewers to feel as though they are in the space.

H&Co: What led you to photography?
GG: I was given a camera very young and just decided this was it. I excelled in photo classes in high school and my teacher encouraged me to continue to study. I was the first to go to college in my immediate family so it was a little terrifying to go to art school but I loved it.  My family is both creative and hard working which is the perfect cocktail to be a freelance photographer.

H&Co: What is your favorite part about shooting a project/the photography process?
GG: I really enjoy the duality of interior photography. There's such a tactile part to it;  you have to feel your surroundings (pillows, throws, textiles, what have you), and understand how light is hitting the different textures, what colors compliment each other, etc.  And then there's the science to it- lines must be straight, light has to be balanced. I feel like it really feeds both sides of my brain. Additionally, I am a people person so I love how collaborative it is. I'm lucky to have a brilliant assistant, Brittany Barb, who adds great feedback when I feel like I'm staring at a pillow for too long. And when the projects are full of color I'm full of energy!

H&Co: What has been your favorite project to shoot with Hyphen?
GG: It's a tie between One Trick Pony and the East Hampton Craftsman. It was so special to see the hard work that Candice and Shelly put into building the coffee shop. The coffee is delicious and the entire shop came out beautifully.  The interiors of the craftsman were a perfect complement to the simple yet strong architecture of the home. I think about that staircase all the time.
